about

Dear A;

Here we are again. The second installation of my Quiet Surrender series is upon us and I have to say what everyone says when they have something coming out: this is some of my best work and I can't wait for you to hear it.

The story behind this one is a fun one. I was on a month long sabbatical from existence in the hinterlands of Byron Bay in a cottage trying to make something grand, elaborate and evocative. That body of work is still very much underway but it was in the cracks of trying to arrange whole orchestras, record guitars and bass and vocals and watching Anya Taylor Joy movies that I was making these much smaller and intimate pieces in the hopes to set out the future Quiet Surrender installments.

These five songs formed somewhat slowly and then all at once as they basically went from me hammering chords away on my 32 note midi keyboard to fully formed evolving landscapes of sound overnight. Quite literally, I had this sudden urge to finish these all off. We'll call it a mix of a desire to walk away from my self-imposed isolation with something finished and the feeling that these were deeply beautiful and emotive beyond what I'd done before.

I finished mixing these when I got home and after a select few people listening and offering feedback, they got a nice little master and here we are.

I was hoping to bounce between releasing Quiet Surrender installments and more elaborate bodies of work but one lesson I'm yet to learn is the more you try and plan your life the less it goes to said plan. Sometimes you have to let go and when something is ready to be shared with the world... you share it.

I believe in the objective truth of art; that all works of art and their artists have a meaning that is true and concrete and unwavering. And I can't wait to share with you the meaning for this EP but I'll let you spend some times with these songs before then.

Anyways, that's enough from me. I hope you're well and I hope these songs can bring some peace and quiet for you in a time where neither of those things seem to be in good supply.

All silence is intentional.

Love, Matty
