about

As the year begins to come to a close, I want to present you with my attempt at a post-rock Christmas song! In essence, this means that I have added sleigh bells to the percussion of an otherwise standard post-rock song.

In all seriousness, this song does represent something special and that is this sort of innate and burning desire to make something more extravagant and lively then my typical outputs. I adore the work I do with the Quiet Surrender series and have no intentions of slowing things down on that front!

But I am a maximalist at my heart. I am a lover of the bright and the bold, the wonderfully gross and pompously gauche; of things taken to the limits and then taken even further. It's what has drawn me to post-rock since I was a but a sprightly teen with the world in his eyes. These long crescendoes, wrought with tension and tease that have you on the edge of your seat until the floor gives out and suddenly; you're floating.

These walls of sound that crush you under their sonic weight, leaving you gasping for air and encompassing you in full, only to then go even further and open up even more with harmony and texture, and layers.

This is my first sort of foray into this much louder and dynamic post-rock; publically at least.

The heavens and the stars themselves might know why I'm beginning to widen the aperture on my sound with a Christmas song of all things but for the sake of typing this out, I'll just say that this time of year is one filled with the promise of a new beginning. Leaves are turned, promises are made and futures are written ever so clumsily into a notes app in an effort to keep you accountable.

And so consider Noël to be just that; a new leaf. A new leaf from a tree quietly growing in the garden I can see from the window of my studio (guest bedroom turned studio I should clarify). One day I will have plenty of leaves, branches, and boughs from this tree of opulent maximalism to share but for now, Noël will have to do.
